Monday 12th April 11am – A talk with Karen Meenan, Global Brain Health Institute & Lewy Body Ireland
Find out about Karen’s work and her plans to support people affected by Lewy body dementia in Ireland
Speaker: Karen Meenan, Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Brain Health, Global Brain Health Institute, Dublin
Karen is a self-employed entrepreneur with a background in marketing and a passion for dementia. Her mother Kathleen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2012 and at that time she became fascinated in the whole world of memory loss.
She is a founder member of the Forget-Me-Nots dementia-inclusive choir which was founded by her sister Orla Horn in 2014 for her mother. She returned to college and completed a degree in Drama and founded an intergenerational dementia-inclusive theatre group called ‘Making Hay Theatre’ in 2017.
Inspired by all the people she met in the dementia community she applied to the Global Brain Health Institute and has been working with Brain Health experts from around the world since September 2020. Karen works with people living with dementia and their carers, developing theater and radio broadcasts using memory triggers from the 1950s and 1960s.
Her interest in Lewy Body Dementia was born only a few short months ago when she watched ‘Robin’s Wish’ and met Kevin Quaid, the vice chair of the European Dementia Working Group.
As a marketer, she is fascinated by Lewy Body Dementia and wants to raise awareness of this very common, but not at all well known disease.
She is currently working with Professor Iracema Leroi and a team of Lewy Body experts to build a website to support the estimated 7,000 people in Ireland who don’t have any support group at present.
