7 May – All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia

We attended the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia’s meeting on Wednesday 7 May to hear The Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, Secretary of State for Health describe plans to move work on dementia forward after the end of the National Dementia Strategy 2009-14. He suggested the work would proceed with a refreshed ‘Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia’ rather than an update of the National Dementia Strategy. The Lewy Body Society will continue to raise awareness that Lewy body dementia is the second most common progressive dementia, accounting for around one in six of all cases of dementia. Our message is that services to assess, diagnose, treat and support dementia need to take into account the features of the Lewy body dementia, including hallucinations and extreme swings of consciousness from alert to confused – we continue to clarify that not all dementia is Alzheimer’s.
